Mercari, Japan's E-commerce Giant, Embraces Bitcoin Payments Starting June

In a significant move, Mercari, one of Japan's largest e-commerce platforms, has announced its acceptance of Bitcoin (BTC) as a payment method starting June this year. The platform will facilitate Bitcoin transactions through its Tokyo-based crypto subsidiary, Melcoin.

Founded in 2013, Mercari has evolved into Japan's leading community marketplace platform, boasting 22 million monthly users as of July 2023. While the company is expanding its presence overseas, it remains committed to innovating within the crypto space.

Mercari's decision to embrace Bitcoin payments marks a notable development in Japan's e-commerce landscape. This move is part of the company's broader strategy, which includes launching crypto-related products and services, such as the Mercari Bitcoin crypto trading platform.

Industry observers consider Mercari's Bitcoin service, along with a rival platform operated by Rakuten, as a new "gateway" for Bitcoin and crypto investors. Rakuten, another major Japanese e-commerce player, has been active in the crypto space for an extended period, operating the Rakuten Wallet crypto trading service.

This development directly impacts Mercari users, offering them the option to make purchases using Bitcoin. The platform's loyalty points system, linked to its crypto trading arm, allows users to convert points into Bitcoin.

In recent months, Mercari has launched various crypto-related products, and its Bitcoin trading service surpassed 1 million users just seven months after its launch in October.
