Ingredients:

  • 500g of ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, chopped onion, minced garlic (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  2. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and warm water. Knead the dough until it becomes soft and pliable, then cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 20 minutes.
  3. Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball out into a circle, about 3-4 inches in diameter.
  4. Place a tablespoon of the meat mixture onto each circle of dough, then fold the dough over and pinch the edges together to seal the filling inside.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium heat. Fry the Huushuur until golden brown on both sides, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  6. Drain the fried Huushuur on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

Tips:

  •  ground beef or lamb with a higher fat content (around 20%) to ensure a moist and juicy filling.
  • Make sure to pinch the edges of the dough together firmly to prevent the filling from leaking out during frying.
  • If the dough is too dry or difficult to work with, add a bit more warm water to the mixture.
  • Serve the Huushuur with a side of sour cream or tomato sauce for dipping.

Conclusion:

Making Huushuur at home is a great way to experience the unique flavors of Mongolian cuisine. With a little bit of practice and some helpful tips, you can create a delicious and satisfying snack that's perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Remember to use high-quality ground meat, pinch the edges of the dough together tightly, and serve your finished Huushuur with a flavorful dipping sauce. 😋
